Two years after the midnight rain washed over that hospital parking lot, the autumn sun came streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my own firm’s new office, high up in a tower in downtown Chicago.

The brass plaque beside the double glass doors bore a single title, and it was mine: Sterling Forensic Auditing and Financial Investigation.

I kept the name Sterling.
