And I watched the detectives’ faces change as they listened, from the professional neutrality they’d walked in with to something harder and more focused, because they had heard a great many domestic stories and they knew the difference between a fight that went wrong and a thing that had been planned.

This had been planned.

And I was about to show them just how thoroughly — because Garrett, in all his contempt for me, had made one mistake that was going to cost him everything, and I had made one preparation, months before, that he never knew about.
