That is the thing they never understood, and the thing I understand now all the way to the bone.

Real strength does not scream, and it does not threaten, and it does not stand over anyone with a rolling pin.

Real strength is quiet.

It is the thing that lies still on a cold floor and waits, and listens, and remembers where the loose grate is.

It is the thing that drags itself, in the dark, one inch at a time, and unscrews the screws, and pushes through the gap, and steps out — bleeding, maybe, and terrified, and alone — into the open air.

I say this because the world told me the opposite for most of my life, and it very nearly cost me everything.
