“Mabel,” he said.

“Please.”

I lowered myself carefully into the chair across from him, my braced leg out to the side, and I looked at him.

“That word,” I said, “sounded different when I was on the floor.”

His face crumpled, the charm collapsing inward on itself.

“My parents lost control,” he said.
