Chapter 18 — The Foundation Carries the Weight

I have had a long time now to think about why they believed it would work — why three intelligent people looked at a woman on a floor and were certain that pain would make her sign, and that with her signature they would have everything.

And I have come to understand that they made a single error, and that it was an engineering error, though none of them would have recognized it as one.

They had confused the visible structure with the thing that holds it up.

They saw Flynn — the CEO, the face, the name on the tower — and they saw the company.

They looked at their lifestyle, the houses and the cars and the standing, and they saw wealth that belonged to them.
