PART 1 — The Squeak at the Door

When the emergency room receptionist heard the wheelbarrow squeak through the doors, she looked up expecting to see a child pushing a toy.

The squeak came again.

Then she saw the girl’s hands wrapped around the metal handles and two tiny bundles tucked beneath mismatched towels.

One baby whimpered.

The other barely moved.

The girl wore worn sneakers and a sweatshirt too big for her.

Her face was flushed from the walk.

A strand of hair had stuck to one cheek, and there was dirt on the edge of her sleeve.

She did not cry.

“Where’s your mom, sweetheart?”

The girl swallowed.

“At home.

I couldn’t wake her.”

A nurse was already coming around the desk.

“For how long?”

The child held up three fingers.

Three days.
