My Mother-in-Law Saw My Newborn Daughter’s Arm and Went Pale—Then She Told Us We Couldn’t Keep Her
PART 1 — THE MARK ON HER ARM
I absolutely loved my mother-in-law, Beatrice.
I know how unusual that sounds.
People love telling nightmare stories about mothers-in-law who criticize everything, interfere with marriages, and act as though nobody is good enough for their precious son.
Beatrice was never like that with me.
From the first year Julian and I dated seriously, she treated me almost like the daughter she had never had.
When I became pregnant, she cried.
Actually cried.
She immediately started buying baby clothes.
Then blankets.
Then books.
Then enough tiny socks to supply an entire maternity ward.
When Julian and I learned we were having a girl, Beatrice helped us repaint the nursery.
Pink.
Not because I particularly wanted pink.
Because Beatrice showed up one Saturday carrying paint cans and announced:
“My granddaughter deserves something cheerful.”
During the final months of pregnancy, she came over constantly.
Cooked.
