That night, after the house had gone quiet and my mother and sister had gone up to their comfortable beds, I went looking for my wife.

I expected to find her in one of the fine guest rooms upstairs, the rooms my money had built.

I found her at the back of the house, on a thin mattress on the floor of a dark, damp storage room — a room full of dusty cardboard boxes and old lawn equipment, the kind of room where a household stores the things it wants out of sight.
