I am writing this from the porch of a small house that is ours — really ours, bought clean, with no lie under any of it — in a quiet town where nobody knew the old story until I chose to tell it.

It is shorter than it was, and there is more gray in it than there used to be, hers and mine both, because the years we have been through put gray in a person.
