My Mother Threw My Toddler’s Soup Down the Drain and Told Me to Get Out — She’d Forgotten Whose Name Was on the Deed
I did not answer.
I carried my daughter out onto the cold landing where my father had left her stroller, and I strapped her in, and as we bumped down the flights of stairs she kept asking me why Grandma had thrown her soup in the trash, and I had no idea, none at all, how to explain cruelty to a two-year-old.
So I didn’t try.
I just told her we were going on an adventure, and I kept my voice bright, and I did not let her see me cry until she was asleep.
