What I did was different in its entire nature.

I did not cancel Karla’s mortgage payment in order to hurt Karla.

I cancelled it because it was my money, and I no longer chose to give it to a person who called me a parasite, and the fact that its absence hurt her was a consequence, not a purpose.

I did not reclaim the apartment in order to make my mother homeless.

I reclaimed it because it was mine, because I and my daughter needed a home, because I was done pretending it belonged to people who had thrown us out of it, and the fact that reclaiming it required my mother to leave was, again, a consequence of the truth, not an act of aggression.
