I had kept the folder.

I had kept every receipt.

I had, without ever quite admitting to myself why, been documenting, for five years, exactly what I paid for and exactly what I owned, the way a person keeps a lifeboat inflated on a ship they still hope will not sink.

And as I turned off my phone screen and watched my daughter sleep peacefully in a stranger’s boarding house, I understood, with a calm that surprised me, that my mother pouring that bowl of soup down the drain was about to become the single most expensive mistake my family had ever made.

But I want to be honest about the folder, and about the years I spent quietly maintaining it, because there is something in it that I did not fully understand about myself until much later.
