Chapter 8 — I’m Not Coming Back
On Tuesday morning, at precisely ten o’clock, my mother called.
“Laura, stop throwing your ridiculous temper tantrum and bring the baby back home.”
I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Sophia build a wobbling tower out of plastic cups on the floor.
“I’m not coming back, Mom,” I said.
A heavy silence came over the line.
“What do you mean, you’re not coming back?” “Exactly what I said.” And her voice instantly hardened, dropping the wounded-mother register and reaching for the one that had controlled me my whole life: the threat.
