On Saturday afternoon, I tracked my father down at his friend’s auto repair shop across town, where he liked to spend his weekends, and I placed a manila folder on the workbench between us.

On top were five years’ worth of pharmacy receipts.

Blood pressure medication.

Insulin supplies.

Cardiac check-ups.

Every one of them paid for out of my checking account.
