And then my father stood up, and grabbed his jacket off the hook, and looked at me, and asked the question I had spent my whole life waiting to hear him ask.

“Where is the notary?”

I have held onto that moment, that single question, more tightly than almost anything else from that entire year, and I want to explain why.

It would be easy to tell this story as one in which my father redeemed himself, in which the silent man finally found his voice and became a hero, and there is a version of the truth in that.

But it is not the whole of it.
