My Parents Abandoned My Grandmother at a Nursing Home and Forged the Deed to Her House — So I Drove 190 Miles to Bring Her Home
The abandonment at the nursing home had told her the answer to her test before we ever reached the courthouse.
They had come for the house.
And she had already moved it out of their reach.
I have thought about that hidden envelope more than almost anything else in this whole story, because of what it reveals about the impossible position my grandmother had been placed in, and about the particular loneliness of it.
Consider what it actually meant, for an eighty-one-year-old woman to hide the deed to her home and then wait to see whether her own son would come searching for it.
It meant that she had arrived at a suspicion so terrible that most people would refuse to hold it — the suspicion that her child, the boy she had raised, was preparing to rob and discard her — and that she had been forced to hold it entirely alone, because there was no one she could safely tell.
