They were large hands, warm, slightly rough, and they closed gently over my face and stopped me where I stood, and my heart slammed up into my throat.

And a voice — a deep voice, close to my ear, a voice I had not heard in over a year but would have known at the bottom of the ocean — said, low and rough and unmistakable:
