“Why didn’t you tell me about the insurance?” Nora asked me, gripping my hand.

“Because you were barely sleeping as it was,” I whispered.

“If he’d realized we knew, he’d have moved faster.” She was quiet a moment.

“Don’t ever carry something like that alone again,” she said.

And I promised her I wouldn’t, and I meant it, and it was the first promise in three years I had made to someone I trusted.
