Chapter 10 — Why Dad Had the Stroke

I lowered myself into the wooden chair by the cot, and I asked the question I was most afraid of.

“Why did Dad have the stroke?”

Lucy was quiet for a moment, looking at my father where he lay staring up at the water-stained ceiling.

And then she told me the last piece.

My father, it turned out, had begun to suspect Ryan’s theft months before any of the rest of it.

He had said nothing to me — he had been afraid, she thought, of driving a wedge between me and my sister, afraid of being the one to break the family.
