Chapter 15 — The Oblivious Brother

For two weeks, I played a part.

It was the hardest acting I have ever done, and I did it for my father and for Lucy and for the case.

I let it be known, at the office, that my heart had been giving me trouble — chest pains, doctor’s orders, the need to step back from the daily running of the company.

And I appointed Maya as temporary chief operating officer, with limited authority to sign, telling her I trusted her, telling her she had earned it, watching my own sister’s face light up with a greed she thought she had hidden from me.
