Chapter 3 — I Followed Her

I do not fully know, even now, why I put the truck in park and got out into the rain to follow her.

Part of it was what I had seen in her hands as she turned away — not just the sack of bottles, but a small paper bag from a pharmacy, and a cheap plastic container of hot soup, held carefully, protectively, the way you carry something meant for someone else.

Part of it was her walk.
