I could not have summoned it; I was in no condition to summon anything.

It arrived on its own, from somewhere below thought, the oldest circuitry a mother has, and it did the thing my shattered conscious mind could not do: it acted.

This is, I have come to believe, one of the quiet miracles of parenthood, the thing no one tells you about until you feel it: that your child’s need can reach a part of you that your own pain cannot touch, can move you when you cannot move yourself, can make you functional in the exact moment you would otherwise fall apart.

I was not able to save myself in that cabin.
