“Your classmates will film it.

People will post it everywhere.”

“I know.”

I reached across the table and grabbed his hand.

“Then why put yourself through all of that?”

Julian lowered his eyes to the red fabric lying between us.

Then he said quietly:

“Because I made a promise.”

I wanted to ask him to forget the promise.

I wanted to protect the son I still had from becoming the target of an entire auditorium.

But Julian refused to change his mind.

His father, Caleb, was furious when he found out.
