They saw a boy in a red dress and they had no context, no story, nothing to go on but the surface of the thing, and the surface of the thing was strange, and people laugh at what is strange when they do not understand it.

It was not kind, and I do not excuse it, but it was human, the ordinary reflexive cruelty of a crowd confronted with something it cannot place.
