A father who never grasped the danger could at least be pitied as a fool.

But Mark had grasped it.

He had filled in every line.

He had known precisely what his child required and had prepared the exact instrument of her rescue, and then, because sending it would have exposed him, he had chosen instead to keep it folded in the dark and let her go on hurting.

The form in the envelope was not evidence of a man who didn’t care.

It was evidence of a man who cared, and understood, and chose himself anyway.
