“Adam,” I said, turning to her fiance.

“You should probably know why Jessica insisted the engagement announcement happen tonight, of all nights.” Jessica’s head snapped toward me.

“Kristen!” she screamed.

And I handed Adam a single printed email, one more document from my well-organized collection.

Jessica had written it to our mother six weeks earlier.

It said: Once I marry Adam, his family’s connections can make Kristen’s questions disappear. Adam read it twice.

Then he reached down, and quietly removed the engagement ring from Jessica’s finger.
