I unfastened the carrier and lifted Leo against my own shoulder, where he quieted almost at once, and I helped Lily straighten her legs and lean back comfortably, and I put a bottle of cold water into her trembling hands and watched her drink it.

I checked them both, the way you check anyone after a hard ordeal — alert, responsive, hydrated, no fever, no dizziness.
