My daughter’s courage, in the end, was not the courage to endure.

It was the courage to stop enduring — to break the rule, to risk the anger she’d been warned about, to decide that her need for help was real enough to act on despite everything she’d been told.

That is the bravery I am proudest of.

Not that she carried the baby for four hours.

That, at the end of four hours, alone and exhausted and afraid, my nine-year-old found, at last, the courage to disobey a bad rule and ask for the help she deserved from the start.

The whole of my job, from that day forward, has been to make sure she never again has to be that brave just to ask.
