It is the placing of an adult’s burden onto a child’s shoulders — making a nine-year-old solely responsible for keeping an infant alive, for hours, with no help and no way out.

It is a weight no child’s body or heart is built to carry, and the fact that my extraordinary daughter carried it anyway, that she reasoned and endured and protected her brother through four hours of it, does not make it acceptable.

It makes it heartbreaking.

She should never have had to be that strong.

The measure of that day is not how much my little girl could carry.

It is that she was made to carry it at all.
