Chapter 5 — Rescue Before Revenge

The snow behind the greenhouse told the rest of it in a language I had spent a lifetime learning to read: two sets of boot prints circling one smaller figure, drag marks scoring the frozen lawn, and a single bare footprint where she had tried, once, to stand.

I knelt and read those marks, and something in me went very cold and very quiet — colder and quieter than the night — and for one long moment the old world rose up in me with all its old answers, and I knew exactly where every person who had made those boot prints was sleeping, and exactly how the man I used to be would have spent the rest of that night.

And then I heard Samantha’s breath rattle behind me, and I heard a car engine turn over near the main house, and I made a choice that I believe saved more than one life.
