Chapter 6 — The Tattoo

I carried her through the doors of Providence Medical Center and the staff came running with a gurney, and in the rush my torn shirt slipped from my shoulder and exposed the tattoo across my chest — a crowned wraith, old ink, a mark that only a handful of people still living had ever seen.

And two of the people standing in that emergency room had already arrived before me.

Rosalind and Christopher were at the front desk, calm as anything, explaining to a triage nurse that poor Samantha had wandered outside after too much wine, that it was all a sad accident, that they’d come as soon as they realized she was missing.
