A Difficult Conversation

Hannah received a letter from her father in August.

She had finally mailed a short note telling him that she and Sophie were safe and living in Pennsylvania.

Thomas replied after three weeks.

His handwriting was still angular, just as she remembered.

He said he was glad they were well.

He also wrote that he had been wrong to treat Hannah’s need for help as a personal failure.

He didn’t ask to visit immediately or demand forgiveness.
