I’d given Dale my formal two weeks’ notice on Thursday afternoon, November seventh.

He’d put in the special order for ninety-one thousand pennies four days before I’d said one word about leaving the garage.

“You ordered this money back on Monday,” I said.

Dale picked up his work pad and jerked his thumb toward the open door.

“The shop’s closed to non-employees on Saturdays,” Dale said.

“You arranged this four days before I quit,” I said.

Dale didn’t reply.
