Because for the first time since that night, objective eyes had witnessed the truth.

It was no longer my word against theirs.

Their own recording had made the lie impossible.

The lie was over.

People sometimes ask why I wept with relief rather than horror at that footage, given what it showed, and the answer reveals something about what it is to be disbelieved that I did not understand until I lived it.

Because there is a specific and terrible loneliness that comes from knowing a truth that no one else will accept, from carrying, alone, the memory of something that happened to you while the entire world insists it happened differently, or did not happen at all.
