And then, at the end, they played the recordings.
My voice through the courtroom speakers: I have copies. My father’s panic: Copies of what? My mother’s whisper: Check her purse. And from the SUV: She found the audit ledgers.
If she talks, we lose everything. The courtroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
And I turned, and I looked directly at my mother, and for the first time in the whole ordeal, she looked back at me.
I did not see anger in her face, or arrogance.
