They install their voice where your own should be.

And so the victory, when it came, was not really the prison sentences, or the asset forfeiture, or even the vindication in court, satisfying as all of those were.

The real victory, the one I carry, was quieter and more permanent than any of that.

It was that I took back the pen.

It was that their voice, which had narrated my life for thirty-four years, telling me I was too much and not enough and never to be believed, finally fell silent, drowned out at last by my own.

They no longer get to decide who I am.
