She said the family would settle this quietly. And when my wife refused, when Odile said she was calling the police, my mother threatened to tell the whole county that Odile had brought it on herself — and then she and my brother locked the bedroom door from the outside and walked away.

Chapter 14 — A Cage With Bars on the Windows

They left my wife shut in that room, hurt, with no phone, with our terrified six-year-old, cut off from every kind of help.

The balcony windows had heavy security bars across them.

I had installed those bars myself, years earlier, when Bryn was a toddler and I lay awake nights afraid of that balcony.

I had put them there to keep my daughter safe.

That night they became the walls of a cage, and I have had to make a separate, private peace with that, and I am still making it.

Odile did what she always did, right to the end: she tried.

She wrote down what had happened, in her own hand, so there would be a record.

She hid the recorder.
