PART 1 — THE MORNING OF OUR ANNIVERSARY

On the morning of my tenth wedding anniversary, I reached up half-asleep to touch my hair.

My fingers met skin. Cold. Bare.

For a few seconds, my mind refused to understand what my hand was telling me.

Then I sat upright.

Hair covered the pillow.

Long brown strands.

Some curled near my shoulder.

Others lay across the white sheets.

I stumbled into the bathroom.

Turned on the light.

And stared.

Every lock was gone.

My head had been shaved while I slept.

Not trimmed.

Not cut badly as some drunken joke.

Shaved.
