“A month ago, Rachel learned that her downtown apartment complex had been sold to developers who were planning major renovations and tripling the monthly rent.”

Rachel nodded solemnly.

“Russell offered to cover several months of rent at a temporary corporate apartment, but I turned him down because I already owed him so much for Sadie’s medical care.”

My eyes widened as I looked between them.

“What medical care are you talking about?”

“Sadie was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect when she was a baby,” Rachel explained softly.

“My medical insurance at the time refused to cover the specialized surgery she needed, and Russell stepped in and paid the hospital directly.”
