One Unguarded Afternoon
What I felt, watching Gabriel’s face come apart, was closer to grief.
Every parent knows the particular helplessness of having to let a child learn something that will hurt him — of standing by while the world teaches him a lesson you would have given anything to spare him.
I could have kept him from this pain only by keeping him in the danger, and so there was no version of that afternoon in which I got to protect him from everything.
I could protect his life, or I could protect his feelings, and I had chosen his life, and the cost of that choice was written across his face in real time while a recorder played his fiancée’s laughter into the room.
He was thirty-two years old and I was watching him understand that the person he had chosen to spend his life with had been, all along, a stranger wearing a face made for him.
There is no clean way to give a person that.
There is only the giving of it, as gently and as completely as you can, so that it never has to be given twice.

I closed my hand over it before she reached it.
