“Daddy,” Rebecca said. The word sounded rehearsed. “Oh my goodness… you look wonderful.”
I didn’t answer. Trent extended a polished handshake. “Walter. It’s been far too long. We were heartbroken about Eleanor. Truly. We’d have come to the funeral, but we only found out afterward.”
We both knew that wasn’t true. Her obituary had run in three newspapers.
“What do you want?” I asked.
Rebecca laid a hand dramatically over her chest. “Daddy, we’re family. We came because we want to help you through this.”
“Where was that family nine years ago?”
