The anger left his face. Evelyn continued. “You were behind on your law school loans. Your father had just been diagnosed with cancer. You were terrified that financial pressure would ruin your chances of making partner.”
Daniel stared at her. “My father paid those loans.”
“No. I did.”
“That money came through his accountant.”
“Because I asked him to transfer it without using my name. I knew you wouldn’t accept it if you believed it came from a painting.”
Daniel lowered himself into a chair. For a long moment, neither spoke. Finally he said, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
