Paint Doesn’t Pay the Mortgage
“I loved you.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady. “You loved the version of me that never required you to question the version of yourself you admired.”
Daniel opened his mouth. Evelyn raised one hand. “I found the Halston Ridge letter.”
The color drained from his face. For the first time that night, he had no response.
“You declined the residency for me,” she said. “You told them my domestic responsibilities made it impossible.”
Daniel looked toward the door. “It was six months. My father was sick. The firm was unstable.”
