The court. That word changed Connor’s face more than any insult could have. He could survive shame as long as he controlled the story. Court meant filings.
Court meant dates. Court meant a transcript. Court meant he could no longer perform his way out of the truth.
“This is ridiculous,” he said. It was the weakest sentence he’d spoken all morning.
“No,” I said, and my voice surprised even me, because it didn’t shake. “This is documented.”
