You cannot live there forever, as though my continued occupancy of my own home were an inconvenience to some plan of his, an obstacle between him and a property he had already, in the ledger of his mind, marked as his.

Every guardianship abuse comes down, in the end, to that one buried assumption, that the older person’s life and home and money are really the younger person’s, held in a kind of trust until they can be claimed, and that the older person is merely a tenant in their own existence, occupying assets that belong, by some unspoken right, to the next generation.
