Payable on Death
Susan broke a saucer while I was there.
One of the four Margaret had painted by hand in about 1978, with the blue flowers that are not any real flower.
It went against the edge of the sink and came apart in two pieces along a brown line that had been in the glaze for years.
And Susan held up the larger piece and said: “Your grandmother kept every little secret she had, but she couldn’t keep a saucer in one piece.”
I said, “What secrets?”
