A family is not an arrangement of people; it is a particular quality of care that flows among them, the thing that makes a household a refuge rather than a hazard.

And by that definition — the only one that means anything — there had been no family at that banquet to destroy.

There had been a woman who struck a child, a man who protected the striker, and a child who was not safe.

That is not a family.

That is a cage with nice furniture, and the fact that it was decorated with birthday banquets and family photos did not make it a home; it only made the danger harder to see.
