I built a firm out of competence. Out of being the woman who now knows how the systems work. And I had done that, I understood at four in the morning, because competence was the thing I had not been allowed to have in that house, and getting it back felt like the whole recovery.

And the only thing I gave Clara Ovalle that mattered was four words that cost me nothing and that any decent stranger could have said.

I do not think the work is worthless. I want to be clear, because that was my first conclusion and it was self-pitying and wrong. The audits get people their credit back.

The document work is real.

But I had the order backwards. I thought the sentence was the soft part and the toolkit was the help.

It’s the reverse. The sentence is the help. The toolkit is what you use after somebody has decided, and if you hand it over before they have decided, you have not given them an exit.
