Pointing Out the Wind
I could have deployed Julian’s name like a shield, months before, and spared myself the scene in the recovery room entirely.
I chose not to.
And I chose not to for a reason that took me a long time to understand about myself: I needed to see what they would do.
I needed to know, with certainty, before I let the storm fall on them, exactly who my parents were when they believed I was powerless.
Because there was a part of me, even then, even after everything, that still hoped, that wondered whether they might surprise me, whether faced with their daughter and their grandson they might, for once, choose love over calculation.
I gave them the chance.
