What she had not expected, could not have imagined, was a quiet woman in a hospital bed saying, simply, then don’t, and meaning it, and feeling nothing but relief at the saying of it.
Because that single word, then, released me.
All my life, my parents’ approval had been the currency I labored for.
And in that recovery room, holding my son, I discovered that I no longer wanted it, no longer needed it, no longer felt its pull at all.
They could keep their approval.
They could keep their name.
I had something they did not understand, and had never bothered to understand, and it was about to change everything.
